Jofra Archer set to miss out on IPL 2024 as he recovers from injury

Jofra Archer would not be taking part in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League.

Jofra Archer

Jofra Archer is unlikely to participate during any of the Indian Premier League games in 2024 as the England Cricket Board attempts to manage his workload in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup in the same year.

Since his elbow stress fracture recurrence in May 2023 while playing for the Mumbai Indians during the Indian Premier League, Archer has not participated in any official cricket matches. He went to India for the World Cup on a temporary reserve basis, however he was sidelined for less than a week due to aggravating elbow discomfort during his training in Mumbai.

He is not included among the more than a thousand names that have signed up for the IPL auction, which will be held in Dubai on December 19 and includes 34 players from England. According to ESPNcricinfo, Archer was instructed by the ECB not to participate in the auction when he recently inked a two-year deal with England that would run from October 2023 to September 2025.

The Mumbai Indians released Archer last week after purchasing him for an incredible INR 8 crore prior to the 2022 IPL. His name is not on the roster of players signed up to participate in the IPL auction, which is scheduled to take place in Dubai on December 19.

“It will be easier to manage Archer’s comeback” : Sources

One of the sources from the England Cricket Board spoke to EspnCricinfo about Jofra Archer. The source stated, “… the ECB believes that it will be easier to manage Archer’s comeback if he is in the UK in April and May under its supervision than if he is in India on the books of an IPL team looking to get their money’s worth from him.”

Thirty-four players from England, including Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid, and Harry Brook, have signed up for the IPL auction. While their team has managed to hold onto players like Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, Jason Roy, Mark Wood, Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Jos Buttler, Will Jacks, and Reece Topley. Both Joe Root and Test captain Ben Stokes, who has been recuperating from surgery upon his left knee, have chosen not to play in the prestigious competition.
