The Indian Cricket team became the No. 1 ranked side across all formats of the game after beating Australia by an innings and 132 runs in the first Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series. India was already the No. 1 ranked side in ODIs and T20s; they went past Australia in the test rankings with the latest win. The men from down under follow the Indians at the second spot with 111 rating points compared to India’s 115. The top two are followed by England (106) at third and New Zealand (100) at fourth positions, respectively.
This is the first time in the history of Indian Cricket that the national side is ranked No 1 across all formats of the game. The Men in Blue achieved the No. 1 status in ODIs after their clean sweeps of Sri Lanka (3-0) and New Zealand (3-0) at home. It happened during the captaincy tenure of Rohit Sharma, making him the first captain to achieve this legendary feat.
India’s chances to qualify for the Test Championship final depend on the BGT
India will still have to beat Australia in the ongoing BGT Test series if they are to retain the No. 1 ranking and qualify for the finals of the Global Test Championships to be played at the Oval. If India loses to the Kangaroos in the upcoming games, they can get past India in the Test rankings. On the other hand, if India beats the visitors 3-1 or 4-0 in the ongoing series, they can take a massive lead over the Aussies in terms of rating points.
India’s clinical performance in the first Test at Nagpur ensured that Indian players also gained a few spots on the Test rankings. Firstly, Ravichandran Ashwin climbed to the second spot in the Test bowlers’ rankings, 21 points behind Australia captain Pat Cummins. Secondly, skipper Rohit Sharma jumped two places in the Men’s Test batter rankings from 10th to 8th after his superb century at Nagpur.
Here’s how fans reacted to the wonderful achievement by Team India:
