Ramiz Raja‘s tenure as chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is set to end following the national team’s Test series defeat to England. Raja, who was appointed by former Prime Minister Imran Khan, has been in charge since September 2021.

According to the Press Trust of India (PTI), Raja’s tenure may be coming to an end, with the previous chairman Najam Sethi set to return to the helm. Sethi recently met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at a gathering in Lahore, according to reports.

“Yes, something is going on definitely. Rumors are strong that Najam Sethi who recently met with the premier at a function in Lahore might be called up to replace Ramiz as Chairman,” a former member of the PCB told PTI.

Sethi resigned after Imran Khan was elected Prime Minister in 2018. When Sharif took office as Pakistan’s Prime Minister earlier this year, it was expected that Raja’s term would end, but in an unusual turn of events, the ex-Pakistan cricketer continued in his position despite the change in government.

The board is patronised by the Pakistan Prime Minister, and the PCB’s constitution states that Sharif has the authority to choose candidates for the country’s cricket regulatory body. According to the report, a lobby within the PCB has launched a campaign to depose Raja. The country’s law ministry has requested that Prime Minister Sharif set this change in motion.

Reports of Raja’s replacement as PCB chairman circulated several times, but he denied the claims and stated that he is not leaving. In September of last year, Raja, a former Pakistan captain and World Cup winner in 1992, was unanimously elected as the PCB’s 36th chairman for a three-year term.

In the meantime, Twitter has erupted with the reports of the PCB chairman being sacked. “@iramizraja  after a few days, would speak in a YouTube video of his own. Like, Comment & Share,” a user wrote.
