Star India batter Cheteshwar Pujara who is leading Sussex in the ongoing County Championships, scored a crucial century as his team struggled at 91-4. On Wednesday, he revealed he would captain Sussex in the forthcoming County Championships.
Pujara, who continues to play a crucial role in the Indian Test team, was a standout performer for Sussex the season before. Pujara scored 1,094 runs in 8 games and led the team in the one-day cup. “Thrilled to lead @sussexccc in the County Championship! Let’s go,” Cheteshwar Pujara tweeted.
Cheteshwar Pujara would be vital for India in the Test Championship final
After being left off the Indian Test team for the two-match series against Sri Lanka in February last year, the Indian batsman joined the English County side, Sussex. Yet his steady play for the County team earned him a place back in the lineup. Pujara participated in his 100th Test last month in Delhi’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy match against Australia. He became the 13th Indian to do it in the game’s longest format.
Pujara was included in Group B of the Indian Cricket Board’s yearly player contracts, along with KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Mohammed Siraj, Suryakumar Yadav, and Shubman Gill. India’s hopes in the Global Test Championship final, which will be played in London from June 7 to 11, would depend heavily on Pujara. After defeating the Australian team 2-1 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy last month, the Indian team earned a spot in the championship game.
The Oval will play host to the highly anticipated title match between India and Australia, with the Rohit Sharma-led team vying for the tournament’s first triumph. India had lost to New Zealand in the final game in the previous edition, which took place in Southampton.
The 16th season of the Indian Premier League, which concludes on May 28, is where the majority of Indian cricketers are now competing. But, Pujara has prioritized Test cricket over the cash-rich league.
Here’s how fans reacted to Cheteshwar Pujara’s masterful innings for Sussex in the ongoing County Championships:
