Former Pakistani speedster Mohammad Amir has joined Derbyshire as an international player for the initial part of the 2024 campaign. He should be able to participate in both the Championship as well as T20 Blast.
Amir had apparently been considered by Derbyshire as a local player because he had applied for citizenship through his marriage. Amir played county cricket for Essex and Gloucestershire in the past and has previously worked with Derbyshire’s director of cricket, Mickey Arthur, who was Pakistan’s coach at the time.
Amir resigned from international cricket in the year 2020 after playing around 150 times across all formats for Pakistan. His most recent first-class match was in May 2022 for Gloucestershire, however, he has a stellar resume with 266 wickets with a strike rate of 22.63. He played extensively in the T20 circuit over the past two years, appearing in the Pakistan Super League, BPL, CPL, and LPL, in addition to the Hundred’s first season.

He will lead our attack in red ball and T20 for the first half of next season and I’m so excited to see what he will produce.”
The former Pakistan coach spoke about the delight of the Derbyshire fans for the express pacer. He said, “I know all about his quality, he has been a big-game player throughout his career and that’s something I’ve seen first-hand. I know the Derbyshire supporters are going to love seeing Mohammad charging in.”
Mohammad Amir spoke after signing the deal, he said that “I’ve enjoyed my experiences of county cricket in the past and joining up with Mickey, who I’ve had so much success with internationally, is something I’m looking forward to.”
