Punjab defeated Chennai by 11 runs to keep their playoffs hopes alive. Winning the toss and opting to bowl, Chennai had a decent start. While they didn’t get many wickets, they choked Punjab for runs. Punjab could only manage 37 runs in the powerplay for the loss of Robin Uthappa.
Bhanuka Rajapaksa, who was brought back to the team, came in after the fall of first wicket and struggled to get going. Dhawan too was struggling to hit the boundaries. However, the duo hung around and didn’t throw their wickets away. At 78-1 in 10 overs on a dying wicket, 150-160 looked a decent total. However, the duo started finding some form in the latter half of the innings. They went on to have a partnership of 110 runs in 68 balls. While Rajapaksa was dismissed for 42 off 32, Dhawan carried on. The southpaw made 88 of 59 balls.
Meanwhile, a cameo of 19 off 7 balls from Liam Livingstone helped Punjab to 187. Chennai didn’t have much to offer in the game until Ambati Rayudu turned up. Rayudu came and smashed all bowlers to all corners of the ground. He scored 78 off 39. Just as when he looked like taking Chennai to an unlikely win, Rabada got the better of him. With 35 needed off 13 balls, MS Dhoni hit a four and a six to give some hope to the fans. However, he lost his wicket in the final over and with him went Chennai’s chances. This was Chennai’s sixth loss in the Indian T20 League 2022.
Ravindra Jadeja:Â We started off very well, we felt we gave away 10-15 runs extra at the end. We did not execute our plans very well. He [Rayudu] was batting brilliantly, throughout but as I said earlier, if we could’ve restricted them to under 175 it would’ve been good.
