Indian T20 League 2023: 5 players who might go unsold in mini auction

Published on

The 20-20 World Cup 2022 is done and dusted and the focus now shifts to the upcoming Indian T20 League mini-auction 2023. Well, there is still some time left for that to take place but all the franchises have been told to submit their list of retained and released players by 15th November.

Over the last week, numerous reports of big players being released by the franchises have come out. While some of the big overseas players won’t be participating in the next edition of the Indian T20 League, some might find themselves back in the auction pool.

In the upcoming mini-auction, a lot of players are likely to fetch big contracts but, unfortunately, there would be some who might go unsold. We have listed out 5 such players in this article:

  1. Ajinkya Rahane

Kolkata franchise bought Ajinkya Rahane’s services at the auction for the 2022 season at his base price of INR 1 crore. With Alex Hales opting out at the last minute, Ajinkya Rahane got the chance to be part of the playing XI in numerous matches. However, he failed to live up to the billing, amassing only 133 runs in 7 matches at an average of 19 and a strike rate of 103.90.

  1. Adam Milne

Adam Milne played only one match for Chennai in the last edition of the Indian T20 League before he was ruled out of the competition due to an injury. He was, later, also ruled out of The Hundred competition due to injury. Milne, though, made his way back into New Zealand for the recently concluded 20-20 World Cup but didn’t get the opportunity to be part of the playing XI.

The New Zealand fast bowler hasn’t played a lot of competitive cricket, of late, and it’s unlikely that any franchise would place a bet on him.

  1. Mohammad Nabi

Kolkata franchise bought the services of Mohammad Nabi at the auction for the 2022 edition for his base price of INR 1 crore. However, he didn’t make a single appearance for the franchise. Besides, his performance in the World Cup as the skipper of Afghanistan didn’t inspire a lot of confidence either. Reports suggest that Kolkata have decided to release him for the next edition and franchises might hesitate to bid for him at the auction.

  1. David Willey

Bangalore picked up Willey at the auction for the 2022 edition but have decided to release the England seamer ahead of the next season. Willey was part of the England squad at the World Cup but didn’t play any game. He is also likely to be part of the auction but the franchises are unlikely to bid for him.

  1. Vijay Shankar

Vijay Shankar had miserable outings in the Indian T20 League in the last few editions. He played 4 matches last season and scored only 19 runs at an average of 4.75. Keeping in mind his performances in the cash-rich event in the last few seasons and increased competition for places, you don’t expect any franchise to bid for Shankar at the 2023 Indian T20 League auction
