Shubman Gill and Matthew Wade were struggling at the crease in the first few overs as the team could reach 31/1 in four overs. The momentum of the game then started to change in the favor of the batting team in the fifth over. The duo scored 16 runs off Boult in the over. They finished the powerplay by hammering 17 runs off Ravichandran Ashwin.

However, the Pink Brigade started to pull the game back with 15 runs in three overs and the wicket of Gill. The opener was run out in the eighth over of the innings. Two overs later, Wade (35) was caught by Buttler trying to hit a short ball from Obed McCoy for a six.
