In a major development, the Afghanistan cricket team is set to tour India for a series after five years. According to recent news reports, Indian Cricket Board is set to host Afghanistan for the first time in the last five years and it will be one of those series intended to prepare the team for the upcoming world cup.
The news report also suggests that the Afghanistani team will visit India after the Test Championship finals in June this year and play a few limited-over matches along with a Test match. Speaking about the same, a senior board official said that yes Afghanistan will come to India.
Speaking with Times of India a senior official said, “Yes, the Afghanistan cricket team will undertake a short tour to India in June, after the World Test Championship final (at The Oval in London from June 7-11).” Notably, India has been one of those countries that supported Afghanistan cricket in recent times. As they have given various opportunities to the team to develop their game. India has offered their three stadiums from Lucknow, Greater Noida, and Dehradun to the Afghani team to play them as home ground.
Afghanistan successfully retained its full membership in the apex council
Due to recent political developments in the country, the Apex Council of Cricket was forced to reconsider its membership in the Afghanistan Cricket Board. In March, Afghanistan’s full membership in the Apex Council was preserved after a Board meeting of the members came to the conclusion that the government of that nation, is to blame for the absence of women’s cricket in that nation.
The Taliban isn’t keen on promoting the women’s game, thus the Board members created an exception in this case. Full membership in the cricket council requires the member to have a working women’s squad. Notably, India is set to play West Indies in July and the series between Afghanistan and India will take place in June 2023.
