Post the 20-20 World Cup 2022, the England team would be returning to Pakistan to play a three-match Test series and the recent turn of events, however, has made things worse for the England cricketers, who are worried to tour the country again.
For the unversed, Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan was shot on his leg on November 3, Thursday and the incident rocked the country and the cricketing fraternity. Mark Wood, England’s fastest pacer at the moment, expressed concern on the same and said that he was worried about the approaching tour.
“It’s obviously not great is it? First of all he’s an ex-cricketer so it’s close to home for us. You respect ex-players and everybody who’s played the game. It’s obviously hugely sad news to hear that as a group,” Wood was quoted as saying by The Mirror.
Obviously it’s worrying: Wood
Further, the pacer admitted to good hospitality during the recent tour and said that the upcoming tour will depend on the officials from the England Cricket Board. Wood further said that he would be worried to travel on the back of recent events and added that he was not sure if changes would be made to the upcoming tour of the Three Lions.
“You respect ex-players and everybody who’s played the game. It’s obviously hugely sad news to hear that as a group. From the security we had on the recent T20 tour I can only mention what we came across and it was fantastic. We were looked after really well, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t worried by that because you’re going back there when there’s been trouble. It’ll be for people above me to decide whatever happens. But obviously it’s worrying when you’re going back there as a cricketer and there’s unrest in the country,” Wood said further.
“We trust the security guys that tell us what to do, so if they say all’s fine then we go but I don’t know if this changes it,” he added. As things stand, England would hope for a win against Sri Lanka in the ongoing 20-20 World Cup 2022 to make it through to the semi-finals.
