‘I lost the will to live’- Former Football World Cup winner Andres Iniesta makes shocking revelations about his struggle with depression

Andres Iniesta, arguably the greatest midfielder the world has ever seen in the last two decades has opened up on his struggle with depression. The former Barcelona midfielder was talking to ‘The Wild Project’ podcast when he revealed the time when he lost his close friend Dani Jarque.

Following his death, Iniesta spiralled into depression and had to take pills to sleep. He has opened up on the worst time of his life and said, “When I was fighting against depression, the best moment of the day was when I took my pills and I went to sleep. I lost the will to live. I hugged my spouse but it was like hugging a pillow, you don’t feel anything.”

“I still go to therapy because I need to fix myself within myself,” he said. “I like to listen to professionals speak about mental illness and depression. With time, life shows you that mental illness and depression can affect anybody.”

I would like to return to Barcelona- Iniesta

The 38-year-old spoke of the material things and how they don’t do much when it comes to facing problems in life. “It’s not about material things because you can have all the cars in the world and anything you want but it’s still hard to face the problems in life,” iterated Iniesta.

The midfielder who had an 18-year-old glittering career at Barcelona also spoke of returning to the beloved club. “I would like to return to Barcelona as a coach or sporting director, but first I have to learn in different areas and later we will see,” he added.

Andres Iniesta won nine LaLiga titles with Barcelona along with four champions League as well. Additionally, he has innumerable individual honours to his name, numbers that only a few could match. His biggest achievement to date is winning the FIFA World Cup with Spain in 2010. He left Barcelona in 2018 and moved to Vissel Kobe in Japan. His exploits in the Japanese League have made him a fan favourite and Iniesta has been made the captain of the Vissel Kobe team.
