The inaugural season of the Women’s T20 League is set to commence on March 4 in Mumbai. All 22 matches of the first season will be played in Mumbai at two venues i.e. Brabourne Stadium and DY Patil stadium. However, the Indian Cricket Board has announced the ticket prices for the upcoming season.
As per the official announcement, Tickets will be free for girls and women while Men and boys will have to pay INR 100 to 400 depending on seats. This is aligned with Board’s prior approach, which was to provide males with discounted tickets and give free seats to women during the recently held India-Australia Women’s T20 series. The purpose of the action is to create interest in and raise stadium attendance for the women’s game.
In the first game of the season, Adani Group-owned Gujarat will take on Reliance Industries-owned Mumbai at the DY Patil stadium in Navi Mumbai. All five teams will play each other twice in the league while the top three will qualify for the playoffs. The team topping the table will directly play in the finals while teams finishing second and Third will lock horns in the eliminator.
Bollywood stars to perform in the opening ceremony
The opening ceremony of the Women’s T20 League will witness some great Bollywood stars. Actor Kriti Sanon, Kiara Adwani along with music sensation AP Dhillon will perform at the DY Patil stadium ahead of the first match on March 4.
Meanwhile, all five teams have announced their captains for the first edition of the tournament. India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and Star batter Smriti Mandhana will lead Mumbai and Bangalore respectively while Australia skipper Meg Lanning, wicketkeeper batter Beth Mooney, and batter Alyssa Healy will lead Delhi, Gujarat, and UP respectively.
Notably, the Women’s T20 League is the world’s second most expensive league in female sports. It has roped five teams for around INR 5000 crore while media rights and other rights also helped it to achieve the feat. Meanwhile, fans react to the free tickets for females during the Women’s T20 League and questioned equality. A tweeter user said, “Hum ladke hai humare sath aisa hi hota hai.”
