‘He isn’t struggling’ – Kapil Dev backs KL Rahul amid his constant failures in the 20-20 World Cup

India have had a great run in the 20-20 World Cup so far after winning back-to-back matches against Pakistan and Netherlands. The ‘Men-in-blue’ put up almost perfect show in the first two matches barring a flop show by KL Rahul and few missed chances by Dinesh Karthik. Rishabh Pant was benched in the first two games to make way for Karthik but the former Indian captain Kapil Dev feels it’s time to bring back Pant into the eleven.

Dinesh Karthik has stormed his way back into the Indian team after a remarkable season in the Indian T20 league. The wicket keeper batter also played some crucial knocks leading upto the World Cup to get into the team as a ‘finisher’. However, the 37-year-old failed to finish the game against Pakistan and missed a few chances in the match against Netherlands.

“I want to say that since we have Rishabh Pant, now is the time India need him. It felt as if Dinesh Karthik would get the job done, but factoring in the wicketkeeping as well, I feel that if India have that left-hander option in the team, this team would look complete,” Kapil said on ABP News.

Another Indian player whose performance has been under the scanner is KL Rahul. The star Indian batter has scores of 4 and 9 in the two innings he’s played so far. More than his low scores, the opener is under fire for his slow starts during the powerplay overs. With Rahul’s continuous failures, fans have been asking Rishabh Pant to replace him as the opener. However, Kapil Dev has backed the opener to do well going ahead in the World Cup.

“He is a very neat cricketer. If you look at his batting, he doesn’t appear to be struggling. He gets out and has in fact, played on twice or thrice. I want him to score runs because it is really important for him to score. Some players are told not to play fast. He can take time initially because he can easily accelerate as and when needed. I want him to play patiently, play the first 8-10 overs, and then when he gets an idea what total is best on the pitch, then go for it,” mentioned Kapil.
