Virat Kohli has been India’s most trusted batter across all formats and the Indian great is in blistering form in the ongoing 20-20 World Cup 2022. For the unversed, he is the highest run-getter in the ongoing tournament with 296 runs at an average of over 95.
However, with India crashing out of the showpiece event on the back of their sepulchral outing against England in the knockouts on November 10, Thursday, we decided to handpick five records that the Indian veteran broke during the tournament.

1) First cricketer to surpass 4000 runs in T20Is
Post his break prior to the start of the Asia Cup 2022, Virat Kohli managed to find his lost form and eventually went on to score his 71st international century in the match against Afghanistan in the continental tournament. However, it was not it, as the batter carried on with his form and played a heroic innings to help India win their first outing in the ongoing 20-20 World Cup 2022 when the Men in Blue were chasing a target of 160.
The veteran remained unbeaten after scoring 82 runs and eventually surpassed 4000 T20I runs, becoming the first-ever batter to achieve the feat and also gathering the most runs in the history of the format. With 4008 runs in 115 games, Kohli remains the highest run-getter in the history of T20Is.
2) Highest run-getter in 20-20 World Cup history
Virat Kohli surpassed Mahela Jayawardene to become the highest run-getter in the history of the 20-20 World Cups when he toiled hard against Bangladesh on November 2. To comment more, prior to the start of this multinational tournament, the Sri Lankan legend reigned at the top with 1016 runs at an average of 39.07.
However, when the talismanic batter reached the 16-run mark against Shakib Al Hasan’s men, he surpassed Jayawardene and currently stands at the top with 1141 runs at an average of 81.50. Amongst the active cricketers, Rohit Sharma, the Indian skipper, lies next to him with 963 runs and it remains to see if the record would be broken anytime soon.
3) Most 50+ scores in Australia in T20Is
Virat Kohli, who is fast becoming one of the legendary batters to have ever played for India in the history of cricket, surpassed Aaron Finch and David Warner to bag the most 50+ scores in Australia. Regarding the Australian skipper and the southpaw, both have 8 50+ scores apiece and eventually, the Indian veteran stormed passed them in a whisker.
Gathering 747 runs at an average of 74.70, Kohli scored his 9th 50+ score on Australian soil when he bagged his fourth fifty of the ongoing 20-20 World Cup 2022 in the semi-finals against England on Thursday.
4) Most Player of the Match awards in T20Is
India and Pakistan faced off in their opening campaign on October 23 and the Men in Blue got the better of their arch-rivals, all thanks to Virat Kohli’s heroics. To add more to the knock, when India were reeling at 31/4 chasing a target of 160, Kohli’s unbeaten 82 saw the team rise above the fiery opponents.
The Indian great bagged his 14th Player of the Match (POTM) award in the shortest format of the game, and thus went on to become the player with the most POTM awards, overtaking Mohammad Nabi’s tally of 13. He yet again scored an unbeaten 64 off 44 balls against Bangladesh and received his 15th Player of the Match award.
5) Most 50+ scores in World events
With 23 50+ scores, Sachin Tendulkar, the Indian legend, remained at the top prior to the start of the ongoing T20 extravaganza, until the veteran, who was on par with Tendulkar when he came into the arena against Pakistan, bagged his 24th 50+ score and eventually helped India cross the line.
Having scored half-centuries against Netherlands, Bangladesh and England, Kohli now remains at the top with 27 50+ scores in Cricket’s governing body events. Amongst the active cricketers, the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma stands closer to him with 22 50+ scores in World Body events.
