English legend defends Rohit Sharma’s captaincy

Mumbai has lost five back to back games in the Indian T20 League 2022

Mumbai has been the most successful team in the history of the Indian T20 League. They have won the title a total of 5 times, the most by any team in the tournament. But the five-time champions are having a torrid time in the 15th edition of the tournament. They have lost all five of their matches in the tournament so far. The fans and cricket experts have unanimously criticized Rohit Sharma’s captaincy for Mumbai’s horrendous run.

Mumbai played their last match against Punjab on Wednesday the 13th of April. The men in blue lost the match by 12 runs after Punjab set a target of 199 runs for them while batting first in the match. The fans and critics thought that Rohit appeared to have run out of wits during Punjab’s innings as he failed to marshal his resources properly.

However, former English off-spinner Graeme Swann has come out in support of Rohit Sharma. He felt that was unfair criticizing Rohit for his captaincy as it was the bowlers who have let the team down. He further said that none of the Mumbai bowlers looked the part except for Jasprit Bumrah.

“I am not happy that Rohit Sharma’s captaincy is questioned here, at all. I think the bowlers are low on confidence. There is a massive difference between a captain who can throw the ball to his bowlers, who can absolutely hit a length,”-Swann said during a conversation on Star Sports.

Until Jasprit Bumrah came on and bowled a brilliant spell in the middle overs, the Mumbai bowlers were all below-par. So do not, for one second, start thinking it’s Rohit’s fault. Everybody he turned to bowled badly in the first 10 overs. That’s how it is,”- he further added.

Notably, Rohit Sharma is currently the all-format captain of the Indian national team. Many think that the pressure of the added responsibility on his shoulder has affected him mentally and the same is reflected in his performance on-field.
