Amid the ongoing speculations about India’s skipper in the upcoming 20-20 World Cup, former India skipper Sourav Ganguly backed Rohit Sharma. Ganguly said that Rohit should continue to lead India till the 2022 World Cup. He also praised Rohit for leading the team by example during his tenure.

“Rohit Sharma should be the captain of India because he’s done so well in the World Cup. He’s a leader. So I expect, and I presume that he will continue as captain till the T20 World Cup,” Ganguly told reporters. It’s worth noting that Rohit has been India’s most successful T20I skipper. He led India to the semi-finals of last year’s T20 World Cup. led the team to the finals of the recently concluded ODI World Cup.

However, the team failed to win any trophy during his stint, and fans are anticipating a change in the set-up. It’s worth noting that in his 51 T20I games, skipper Rohit has won 39, making him the second-most successful captain in the world. He needs four more wins to surpass Babar Azam, Ashgar Afghan, and Eion Morgan’s tally of 42 wins as captain.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, the Indian Cricket Board announced squads for the upcoming all-format South Africa tour. Skipper Rohit Sharma and batter Virat Kohli will be available for the Test series only, as they asked for rest in white-ball cricket. However, news reports suggest that the board has decided that Rohit will lead the team in the upcoming World Cup, while Virat Kohli will be dropped from the squad.

According to reports, Virat’s place in the squad is in jeopardy, and team management will sit with him to decide his future. It’s worth noting that Virat Kohli is the highest run scorer in T20I cricket for India and has been phenomenal in last year’s 20-20 World Cup in Australia.
