A local court on Monday imposed an international travel ban on former Sri Lankan cricketer Sachithra Senanayake, who is being accused of influencing games. The 38-year-old Senanayake, who competed in 24 T20 Internationals, 49 ODIs, and one Test match between the years 2012 and 2016, has been charged with attempting to manipulate games in the 2020 Lanka Premier League.
According to reports, he persuaded two players to rig games over the phone. The Controller General of Immigration and Emigration was directed by the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court to impose a three-month travel ban on Senanayake.
The Attorney General’s Office was able to get the court order. The Special Investigation Unit of the Sports Ministry had given the Attorney General’s Department instructions to fabricate criminal accusations against the former off-spinner, the court was informed.
In the 50-over format, the off-spinner has claimed 53 and 25 wickets, respectively. He was a member of the Sri Lankan team that triumphed at the 2014 Men’s T20I World Cup in Bangladesh. The only years of Senanayake’s international career were from 2012–2016. In a T20I encounter versus Australia in Colombo in October 2016, he participated in his final international contest for Sri Lanka.

Even still, the four years he spent playing for the national team were clouded by controversy. Senanayake was prohibited from bowling during international cricket in July 2014 as a result of an illegal act. In December of the same year, he had to undergo the same remodelling before returning to the team. Prior to bowling the ball in an ODI that year, he knocked Jos Buttler out at the non-striker’s end. After changing his action, his accomplishments in international cricket would not have been the same.
