A high-flying Indian team were brought back to the ground by England in the second ODI on Thursday. Mirroring India’s performance from the first ODI, England gave a masterclass of their own to defeat the Men in Blue by a massive 100 runs to level the three-match ODI series.
Talking of the game, it was a consecutive toss-win for the Indian captain in the second ODI as well. Hoping to recreate the performance of the first ODI,1 he chose to bowl first again. Though not as good, India came with a good bowling performance in this match as well.
Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow improved on their showing from the last match to give a decent start to the hosts. Hardik Pandya came up as the partnership breaker, dismissing Roy on team score of 41. Joe Root held the fort for a while before a resurgent Yuzvendra Chahal took three consecutive wickets (Bairstow, Root and Ben Stokes) on 72, 82 and 87 to break England’s back.
India, however, could not get rid of the England lower order as Liam Livingstone (33), Moeen Ali (47) and David Willey (41) were able to take England to a fighting total of 246.
While not as low as last game’s total, Indian batters hoped to chase this down easily given their quality, but it wasn’t the case. Indian batters were put under pressure from the word get-go. England’s accurate bowling, as well as sensational fielding, did not allow Indian batters any runs early on and the pressure finally broke their defences down.
Captain Rohit Sharma was the first to depart at 4-1. A great platform was set for Virat Kohli for his comeback but he couldn’t do much either, getting out in his usual poor fashion. Ravindra Jadeja (29), Suryakumar Yadav (27), Hardik Pandya (29) and Mohammad Shami (23) tried but it was too little too late for India as they eventually lost by a massive 100 runs. Reece Topley, with a bowling performance of 6/19, was the Player of the match.
Let’s look at how Twitter reacted to India’s loss after a sensational win in the first ODI.

Poor approach and tactical plan by #IndianCricketTeam! Such a defensive mindset, annoying to see. @ImRo45 #RahulDravid #rohitsharma Can we get some sort of intent in our game. Still playing old school cricket. Shame! #indiavsengland #india #AskTheExpert #SonyLIV

#IndianCricketTeam just proved once again today that we haven't conquered the fears of collapse after our first 3 get out quickly. The only addition to that team in middle order that lost the 2019 WC semifinal was #SKY as #Pant,#Hardik & #Jadeja were there.#INDvsENG #Lords pic.twitter.com/5TV4bxCkkF

@imjadeja is so overhyped as a batsman in limited overs cricket. Haven’t seen him even taking the team and crossing the line. #IndianCricketTeam #SonyLIV #indiavsEngland #AskTheExpert #india
