As they start to dream of winning the tournament for the eleventh time in their entire history and their first time since taking home the title in the 2012–13 season, they will now focus on Wednesday’s Copa del Rey match. Athletic will put themselves through a difficult test on Wednesday, but they can find motivation in the knowledge that they had previously beaten Atletico this year, winning 2-0 at San Mames in their meeting.
In order to get to the semifinals, Athletic had to defeat Rubi, Cayon, Eibar, and Alaves, among five other clubs. In the quarterfinals that were held last month, Ernesto Valverde’s team overcame record holders Barcelona by coming back from a 2-1 deficit to win 4-2 in overtime.
