‘Chalo shukar hai isko pata toh hai’ – Fans react to Suryakumar Yadav opening up on his poor form in ODI cricket

Suryakumar Yadav had stellar last game as he scored a match winning knock against the West Indies during the third T20I.

In 2021, Suryakumar Yadav earned his ODI and T20I debuts over the course of a four-month period. Suryakumar ultimately fulfilled his professional dream when he played his debut game as an Indian player in March 2021, a Twenty-20 International match against England. He had already established his credentials with consistently good performances within domestic cricket and the IPL.

Suryakumar Yadav has been miles ahead of the opposition in the T20I format with 1780 runs across 49 innings at a fantastic strike-rate of 174.33. His ODI statistics stand in stark contrast, and it is unclear why he shone in one white-ball game but was unable to duplicate the amazing performance in 50-over cricket. In 24 ODI innings so far, Suryakumar has scored 511 runs at a 24.33 average.

It’s in my hand now how to change the responsibility into an opportunity: Suryakumar Yadav

The 32-year-old claims he doesn’t feel “shame” about admitting that his one-day cricket statistics for India are “very bad,” but he is instead focused on becoming better. He said, “Agar mai honest hoon toh, mujhe pata hai mere one-day ke numbers bilkul kharab hain aur isme koi sharam nahi hai bolne mai, subko pata he hai (To be honest, my one-day numbers are absolutely bad and there’s no shame in admitting that, everybody is aware).”

While Suryakumar has played enough T20 cricket, the same is not true of the one-day format, therefore the team management is urging him to find ways to support the team’s goals. He added, “We all talk about honesty and you have to be, but how you can improve is more important. Rohit (Sharma) and Rahul (Dravid) sir have told me that this is the format that I don’t play much so you have to play it more and think about it. If you are batting in the last 10-15 overs, think about what you can do for the team. All we want you from his play 45-50 ball if you are getting to bat in the 15-18 overs, play your own game. It’s in my hand now how to change the responsibility into an opportunity.”
