The second match between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League 2023 turned out to be a completely one-sided affair. The Men in Yellow dominated all the departments in the match and registered a convincing 6-wicket victory.

Winning the toss, MS Dhoni decided to bowl first at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. In an unexpected turn of events, MI skipper Rohit Sharma did not open the batting against their archrivals. Instead, Cameron Green and Ishan Kishan opened the batting to rack up some fast runs on a slow Chennai surface.

The strategy, however, backfired as the CSK bowlers were prepared for Green, who was dismissed in the second over. The team skipper then came out to bat at number three, but the five-time champions’ ploy backfired once again. After losing Kishan in the third over, Rohit attempted an attacking stroke but was dismissed by Deepak Chahar in the same over.

Suryakumar Yadav and Nehal Wadhera then formed an alliance to keep MI’s prospects alive. The two added 54 runs for the 4th wicket partnership before Surya (26) was dismissed in the 11th over. While Tristan Stubbs (20) played a short cameo, it was Wadhera (64 runs in 51 balls) who played a brilliant knock for the five-time champions.

In the end, MI lost far too many wickets as they were restricted to a score of 139/8 in the first innings. For CSK, Matheesha Pathirana was the pick of the bowlers with his three-wicket spell. Chahar and Tushar Deshpande also took two wickets each, while Ravindra Jadeja grabbed one.

CSK cruise through the chase

Unlike MI, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway got their team off to a decent start with their 46-run opening partnership. After Gaikwad’s wicket (30), Conway continued to bat with caution as he was supported well by Ajinkya Rahane (21) and Shivam Dube.

MS Dhoni came in and finished the job with 6 wickets and 14 balls to spare after Conway (44 runs in 42 balls) was eventually removed in the 17th over. CSK moved up to second place in the points table with this victory.
