Ahmed Shahzad, who was not selected in the most recently concluded players draft for the next season, declared his intention to retire from the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
The 32-year-old Pakistani batter accused all six PSL clubs of working together to prevent him from playing in the tournament. He had leveled harsh comments at them which might not have been necessary. Shahzad participated in PSL competitions with the Quetta Gladiators in 2016, 2017, 2019, as well as 2020. He spent a single year in between playing for the Multan Sultans in 2018.
Over the previous several years, Ahmed Shahzad has been unable to gain an opportunity in the league. Shahzad announced his desire to leave the league and vented his fury in a post on X following his lack of selection in the most recent PSL 2024 draft.
He said, “I’m parting ways and saying goodbye to Pakistan Super League for my own self-respect. I’ve never played for money and will never do it. While many chose international leagues across the globe, I decided to grind in the domestic circuit to prove my love for the game, and to wear the Green Flag again. I’m taking this decision keeping money out of it (was offered several contracts to play leagues yet chose Pakistan).
The Pakistan batter said, “I will not play the PSL again with these six teams. It seems like a shared responsibility to keep me away from PSL, and all franchises have shaken hands. Lastly, I’m thankful to all the support I’ve received from my fans across the world. I can only assure one thing and that’s never giving in to unfair demands or accept anything which lets my country down.”
“A heartfelt goodbye to Pakistan Super League” : Ahmed Shahzad
Ahmed Shahzad sent PSL a heartfelt farewell message that said, “A heartfelt goodbye to Pakistan Super League! I’m writing this note which I thought I wouldn’t be writing this year. Another PSL draft goes by and same old story – didn’t get picked.”
Ahmed Shahzad made his debut in international cricket in 2009 and has since played for Pakistan in 13 Test matches, 81 ODIs, and 59 T20 matches. He last appeared for Pakistan in a T20I match in Lahore versus Sri Lanka in 2019.
