In the second game of the Super Six round of the ODI World Cup qualifier 2023, Sri Lanka and the Netherlands locked horns. The Dutch entered the second round of the tournament with two points as they beat the former World Champions, West Indies. On the other hand, the 1996 World Cup winners had four points as they beat Oman and Scotland in the previous round.

Meanwhile, in the game, the former World Champions, Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first. For the first time in the tournament, a team winning the toss elected to bat first. After all, as it is winter in the Southern African part of the world, teams have chosen to bowl first in the morning. Meanwhile, the Lankan Lions were rocked early by the Dutch bowlers.

The likes of Logan Van Beek, Saqib Zulfiqar, and Ryan Klein combined for taking six wickets for just 96 runs. Logan took three wickets in this phase, Zulfiqar took two and Klein took one. Dhananjaya de Silva (93) took the team to 213 all-out and also got support from Wanindu Hasaranga (20) and Maheesh Theekshana (28).

Sri Lanka and the Netherlands produced a low-scoring thriller

In reply, the Orange Army had a poor start as Vikramjit Malik was caught at backward point on the second ball of the innings. In the next over, Max O’Dowd (0) was trapped lbw by Dilshan Madhushanka. On 11/2, the likes of Wesley Barrassi and Bas de Leede put together 77 runs for the third wicket. Things were going well for the team when the former notched another half-century of his ODI career. However, after his wicket, the team went from 88/2 to 151/8.

At this point, the team needed a partnership rather than to keep up with the required run rate. Even though skipper Scott Edwards and Ryan Klein took the game close, the latter got out when the team needed 38 runs with one wicket left. Edwards remained unbeaten on 67 but the team lost by 21 runs as Aryan Dutt lost his wicket to Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka.
