Michael Vaughan, the former captain of England, described India as the world’s most ‘underachieving’ side that ‘doesn’t win anything’. He claimed that despite having skill and assets at their disposal, Team India has not won any big titles in years, which makes them unworthy.
Following India’s crushing innings and 32-run loss to South Africa during the Boxing Day Test in Centurion, Vaughan made these comments. For Rohit Sharma’s side, it completed a disappointing 2023 that included losses during the World Test Championship (WTC). They also ended up losing the ODI World Cup 2023 final.
While doing commentary for the Australia-Pakistan Test series, Michael Vaughan said, “Here’s a question for you – India, in terms of cricket, are they one of the most under-achieving sports teams in the world?”
The former England batter added, “With all the talent that they have… I think they are, yeah. Well, they don’t win anything. When was the last time they won something? With all the talent they have, all the skillsets… they won here (Australia) twice, magnificent but the last few World Cups, been nowhere, T20 World Cups, nowhere. You go so South Africa, who are, you know, useful in Test match cricket and to produce a performance like that… I mean, with all the talent they have, and the resources they have, I don’t think they win anything.”
Michael Vaughan’s appreciation tweet for Mohammad Hafeez
During the ODI World Cup 2023, Michael Vaughan and Mohammad Hafeez engaged in some lighthearted banter. This may have caused a great deal of animosity between the two.
Nevertheless, Vaughan went to X following Australia’s victory against Pakistan. He applauded the Pakistan Team Director with the manner in which the visitors forced the hosts to work for each run and wicket.
He wrote, “Pakistan were very good this week .. too many extras in the first innings & 2 catches that should have been taken away from a famous win at the G .. been very impressed with @MHafeez22 as coach .. ?”
