It seems that Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal in the second game of the ongoing Ashes 2023 might be discussed a bit longer. For the unversed, the wicketkeeper batter left the crease thinking the over was officially finished. After all, Cameron Green bowled the sixth ball of one of the overs on Day Five. However, the umpires were yet to call the over when Alex Carey flicked the ball towards the stumps.
This led to a controversy as the English fans booed the Australian players. In the long room, some of the MCC members heckled the likes of Usman Khawaja and others. Those members were suspended after the game. Meanwhile, the home team, England lost the game and is now trailing by 0-2. After the game, skipper Ben Stokes and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak raised the concern of ‘Spirit of the Game’.
“The prime minister agrees with Ben Stokes. He said he simply wouldn’t want to win a game in the manner Australia did,” UK PM spokesperson said in a statement.
“Do I want to win in that manner?” Stokes posed. “The answer for me is no.”
“It was more about the spirit of the game,” England coach Brendon McCullum said. “When you become older and more mature you realize the game and the spirit of it is something you need to protect. You have to make decisions in the moment and they can have effects on games and people’s characters.
“By the letter of the law he is out. Jonny was not trying to take a run and the umpires had called ‘Over.’ It is one of those difficult ones to swallow. You look at the small margins, it is incredibly disappointing.”

In reply to Sunak’s comments, Albanese sympathized with his English counterpart. However, the latter said that Sunak might have gotten different lessons on the game.
“Prime Minister Sunak’s disappointment is understandable,” he told The Sydney Morning Herald.
“But he must not have had the same lessons I got in primary school at St Joseph’s Camperdown: ‘Stay in your crease’.
