The reigning champion Adelaide Strikers defeated Brisbane Heat by three runs in the WBBL 2023–24 final on Saturday at the Adelaide Oval to win a record-tying second Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) title.
Upon winning the coin toss, the Strikers chose to bat first and amassed 125 for five thanks to big knocks from captain Tahlia McGrath (38), Laura Wolvaardt (39) as well as others.
During their third WBBL final, the Heat started the chase off strongly until the Strikers made a comeback in the middle overs. The Heat were down four at 62 after McGrath removed Mignon du Preez as well as Laura Harris in consecutive deliveries.
Following that, Charli Knott and Amelia Kerr put up a 34-run partnership for the fifth wicket before the latter was removed. She was sent back to the pavilion by Strikers seamer Megan Schutt on 20. After giving up seven runs in the last over, Schutt came back to dismiss Heat skipper Jess Jonassen with 20 needed off 12 deliveries.
Leg-spinner Amanda-Jade Wellington made history in the WBBL final by taking two wickets in the penultimate over, following a six from Mikayla Hinkley. This was her closest victory to date. The Strikers are currently the third team in history who have defended the WBBL crown. Moreover, they are also the latest squad to win two titles in WBBL history.
Steve Smith set to spark BBL with amazing return
In an attempt to improve his Twenty20 form ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024 in June, Australian batter Steve Smith is set to play for the Sydney Sixers in the 2023–24 Big Bash League (BBL).
Smith is expected to be able to participate in the initial half of the BBL. Up to January 29, the Australians will play a total of five Test matches against Pakistan and the West Indies. Smith is hoping to make a name for himself as a T20I opener after being left out of much of Australia’s T20 World Cup 2022 campaign.
