In the 61st game of the ongoing IPL 2023, Chennai Super Kings played hosts to Kolkata Knight Riders in a reverse fixture between both teams. Ahead of the game, the home team was coming off two back-to-back wins. Also, they needed to win this game to ensure their place in the playoffs and almost guarantee the top-two finish. On the other hand, KKR was coming off a heavy loss against Rajasthan Royals.

In the game, CSK won the toss and elected to bat first on a dry surface and humid conditions. They had a good start as they scored 52 runs after losing only one wicket. However, things went awry as they lost four wickets from over number eight to 11. From 52/1, they were reduced to 72/5. At this stage, the likes of Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja put together 68 runs.

However, they failed to get the desired finish and ended up only 144/6. For the Knight Riders, Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine took two wickets each while Vaibhav Arora and Shardul Thakur took one each.

Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh take Kolkata Knight Riders home

In reply, the Purple Brigade had a poor start as they lost three wickets for 33 runs. Deepak Chahar took all these wickets. Once again it looked like another away team will lose at the Chepauk. However, the likes of skipper Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh put down their foot and ensured the team’s win. They put together 99 runs for the fourth wicket with the latter scoring 54 off 43 balls including three sixes and two fours.

The partnership was broken by Moeen Ali’s direct shy at the stumps with Singh getting run out. On the other hand, Rana stayed till the end for the team and scored an unbeaten 57 off 44 balls. The two-time winners won the game by six wickets. Still, no team has officially qualified for the playoffs and CSK’s chances of playing the Qualifier One has reduced massively.
