Tamim Iqbal was earlier ODI skipper for Bangladesh.

Shakib Al Hasan

Shakib Al Hasan will be leading Bangladesh in the Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup in India. This comes after Tamim Iqbal said that he would not be captain of the ODI side going forward. Tamim had a back injury which led him to take the call. Shakib has led Bangladesh many times in the past and the national side have done very well under the leadership of the 36-year-old.

Bangladesh will want to make sure that they have an impact in the upcoming World Cup in subcontinental conditions. The last time the World Cup was held in 2011, they have a great account of themselves on their home turf. The Bangla Tigers will be selecting a squad for the Asia Cup which will be co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The multilateral tournament starts on August 30.

Shakib-Al Hasan had taken over as the T20I captain of Bangladesh in 2022

“We have appointed Shakib as the captain for Asia Cup and World Cup. The World Cup and Asia Cup squad will be announced tomorrow. The selectors will pick a squad of 17 members,” Nazmul Hassan told the Press on Friday. After the Asia Cup concludes Bangladesh will have a home series against New Zealand before they fly down to India for the World Cup. Shakib now holds the reins across all formats.

The Bangladesh all-rounder took over the T20I captaincy in 2022. There were reports stating that the ODI captaincy may be given to Litton Das but the Bangladesh Cricket Board went for Shakib because of his experience having had many stints as skipper of the national side. Shakib has been in the news for his outbursts at umpires and it remains to be seen how he will tackle that problem.

The fans will be hoping that with Shakib back at the helm, Bangladesh will fancy their chances in the upcoming 50-over World Cup. The Bangla Tigers have a host of spinners and also some good pacers which makes them a very threatening outfit. Tamim had retired from cricket but took back his decision after he met Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
