Star New Zealand batter and skipper Kane Williamson is set to make a comeback after injury. In the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023, Williamson will make a comeback against Bangladesh on Friday, October 13. The Kiwi skipper announced his availability and fitness status a day before the game.

“Initially, it was not considered. And to be honest, it was probably a good thing just to get my head stuck into rehab each day and not sort of rush it, and that was my focus. I was fortunate as well that I had a good team around me back home and also fortunate not to have a lot of setbacks during that time”, says Williamson in the press conference.

Further expressing his happiness for being fit for the prestigious tournament, Williamson said, “So there were lots of little steps forward, which I guess accumulate to being here now really and getting close and realising that if each week does keep progressing well, ticking off all those sorts of milestones along the way, and there are many of them, then there might be a chance. And yeah, I’m grateful that that was something that could be done, and getting named in the squad was a fascinating moment.”

Tim Southee has yet to regain full fitness

Meanwhile, Kane Williamson also revealed that veteran pacer Tim Southee is yet to recover from a thumb injury. It’s worth noting that in the recently concluded ODI series against England, Southee dislocated his right thumb. The Kiwi pacer underwent minor surgery to treat his injury and has yet to get match fitness. This means he is likely to miss the tournament for at least one more week.

It’s worth noting that New Zealand had a great start to the ODI World Cup 2023. The team beat defending champions England by nine wickets and the Netherlands by 99 runs in the first two games. It will be interesting if Kiwi continue their winning run against Bangladesh. The team has been among the most consistent performers in recent years and will aim to win the trophy.
