In the 21st match of the ODI World Cup 2023, India beat New Zealand by 4 wickets. After Mohammad Shami’s five-wicket haul, Virat Kohli’s amazing batting performance helped India beat table-toppers in Dharamshala. This is India’s first win against the Kiwis in a multinational tournament in the last twenty years.

Earlier, after winning the toss, India skipper Rohit Sharma opted to field first. His decision went well with the team, as New Zealand lost two wickets for just 19 runs. Opener Devon Conway was dismissed for a duck by Mohammad Siraj, while Mohammed Shami dismissed Will Young for a mere 17 runs. After their departure, all-rounder Rachin Ravindra, along with Daryl Mitchell, added 159 runs for the third wicket.

Ravindra, in his innings, scored 75 runs off 86 balls with the help of seven boundaries and a six. Meanwhile, Mitchell went on to hit his first ODI World Cup century as he scored 130 runs off 127 balls with the help of nine fours and five sixes. In the end, both Mohammad Shami and Jasprit Bumrah made a comeback, giving up just 53 runs in the last 10 overs and clinching seven wickets. Shami got five wickets, while Kuldeep Yadav got two wickets. Pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj took a wicket each.

Rohit Sharma gave India a flying start

Chasing a competitive total, India got off to a flying start at a tricky batting wicket. India skipper Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill added 71 runs for the first wicket and dominated the Kiwi bowling line-up in the first powerplay. Rohit, in his innings, scored 46 runs off 40 balls with the help of four fours and four sixes. Meanwhile, Gill, in his inning, scored 26 runs off 31 balls with the help of five boundaries.

After their departure, star batter Virat Kohli took the charge and scored a brilliant half-century. Meanwhile, he added 52 runs for the third wicket along with Shreyas Iyer and 54 runs for the fourth wicket with wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul. Iyer, in his inning, scored 33 runs off 29 balls with the help of six boundaries. On the other hand, Rahul, in his innings, scored 27 runs off 35 balls with the help of three boundaries.

In the end, Kohli, along with all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, added 78 runs for the sixth wicket to win the game for India. Kohli, in his inning, scored 95 runs off 104 balls with the help of eight fours and two sixes. Meanwhile, Jadeja, in his innings, scored unbeaten runs off balls with the help of fours and sixes. New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson clinched two wickets, while Mitchell Santner and Trent Boult got one wicket each. With this victory, India tops the table in the ongoing tournament with five wins in as many games.
