‘Aaj he ka wo historic din’ – Fans react to 16-year anniversary of India’s T20 World Cup victory

This was India’s first World Cup win after the 1983 Cricket World Cup triumph

India 2007 WC win

On this day exactly 16 years ago, India captured the 2007 T20 World Cup. MS Dhoni, the team’s captain, was a relatively inexperienced yet confident leader.  In front of an enthusiastic crowd at the Wanderers in Johannesburg, South Africa, The Men in Blue overcame their fierce rivals in Pakistan by five runs to win the inaugural T20 title.

The Men in Blue’s 2007 World Twenty20 success was particularly noteworthy since it was their first major limited-overs title since winning the 1983 World Cup. The Asian rivals battled out arguably the most outstanding final spectacle ever witnessed in a major international tournament, and the world saw a magnificent accomplishment.

Team India chose to bat first after winning the toss earlier that day. During the first six overs, they quickly lost their first wicket in the form of Yusuf Pathan. India batted well with some great contributions from the batters. However, Rohit Sharma’s late unbeaten surge where he scored 30 from 16 balls and Gautam Gambhir’s important 54-ball-75 led their team to a score of 157.

Pakistan were losing wickets in regular intervals while attempting to chase what seemed like a manageable total. Misbah-ul-Haq, right handed batter revitalised the match by smashing three sixes in an over bowled by Harbhajan Singh, keeping his team’s hopes alive till the end.

Pakistan still had one wicket to take, but needed 13 runs from the final over. By giving the ball over to the newbie Joginder Sharma to remove Haq, Dhoni caught everyone off guard. Haq hit Sharma’s second delivery for a six, putting Pakistan in position to win.

He misread the following ball, attempted the scoop, but Sreesanth caught it, giving India a thrilling victory by five runs. The first T20 World Cup was won by the inexperienced Indian squad, and the momentous victory is still vivid in the thoughts of cricketers and cricket enthusiasts everywhere.
