The player registration window for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 auction closed on November 30 and fans are now eagerly awaiting the battle between the 10 franchises around the table. The mini-auction is scheduled to take place in Dubai on December 19, and a total of 1166 players from around the world will go under the hammer.
This is the first time that an IPL auction is being held outside India. 830 Indians and 336 foreign players have registered their interest to be a part of the 17th edition of the cash-rich league. The list includes 212 capped, 909 uncapped and 45 Associate players. However, all together only 77 slots need to be filled by all the franchises, of which 30 will be reserved for foreign players.
Notably, 25 players, including 2023 World Cup heroes Pat Cummins and Travis Head, have put themselves in the highest base price category of Rs 2 crore. In this article, we take a look at 3 shocking names registered at a base price of INR 2 crores.
3. Kedar JadhavÂ
The most shocking name in the above list of players with a base price of Rs 2 crore would be Jadhav. The now 38-year-old Indian all-rounder was not bought by any team last season. Yet he surprised everyone by placing himself in the highest base price category. Mathews has been a part of several franchises in the past and failed to live up to expectations. So it will be interesting to see if someone buys him this time.
2. Angelo Mathews
The veteran Sri Lankan all-rounder wasn’t picked by any franchise in the IPL auction after 2017. Yet he has opted to put himself in the Rs 2 crore category. The 36-year-old made little impact in 49 IPL matches between 2009 and 2017 for three different teams. The former Sri Lanka captain hasn’t played a T20I or ODI for Sri Lanka since March 2021. So it remains to be seen if any franchise will be willing to invest in him for a big price.
1. Jamie Overton
England’s Jamie Overton is one of those players who go unsold due to his huge base price. In 83 T20s, the 29-year-old has taken 67 wickets, at an economy of more than 9. The bowling all-rounder is highly unlikely to be picked among the maximum 30 foreign cricketers who can be sold in the IPL 2024 auction.
