After escaping with a 1-1 draw versus Newcastle United, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) had to face a social media uproar. Accusations of improper play sprang out among the fans. There were many claiming that the Parisians took advantage from a questionable penalty call.
PSG had the early advantage in the game, but 24 minutes in, Newcastle took advantage of a gap to turn the tide. Tino Livramento’s deft movement caused havoc in the Parisians’ defence, opening the door for Miguel Almiron’s valiant goal attempt.
Goalie Gianluigi Donnarumma parried Almiron’s effort, but it dropped to Alexander Isak, who took advantage of the opportunity to give Newcastle the lead. With Newcastle’s defence holding strong as the game came to an end, a contentious moment occurred.
As Ousmane Dembele’s cross seemed to contact Livramento’s arm, PSG’s cries for a penalty were answered. After checking the pitchside monitor, the referee’s decision to give away a spot-kick was received with incredulity, particularly because replays appeared to indicate that the ball had struck Livramento’s chest originally.
Nick Pope was right to forecast which way the penalty was going and dived there. However, Kylian Mbappe rose to the occasion and converted the penalty. With the score at 1-1, Mbappe’s accurate shot secured a thrilling conclusion to the game.
PSG still favourites to qualify despite struggling performance
The route for Paris Saint-Germain to advance to the Champions League round of 16 is still open. Even after a hard-fought draw with Newcastle, they can still make it out of their group. If they are able to advance to the knock-out stage, it would be their 12th season in a row to make it to the competition’s final rounds.
This is a distinction that has not spared the team from criticism. This is because it gives added pressure on the team to perform. The Parisians are now in second position in the group they are in, behind Borussia Dortmund, who have qualified, following their loss to Newcastle.
