Chris Gayle is known for breaking records. But a unique moment happened with the universe boss in the Legends League Cricket 2023 match between Bhilwara Kings and Gujarat Giants. While batting, Gayle got his bat broken. Despite suffering a damage in his equipment, Gayle still got the ball to reach the boundary to fetch him 4 valuable runs.
Ryan Sidebottom was bowling to Gayle in the last over of the Powerplay. Gayle seemed to be on full song on a slow wicket in Ranchi. In 20 balls, Gayle had raced away to 38 balls. He reached 42 runs in his first 21 balls. At one stage, Gayle took GG to a score of 60 runs in the first 5.4 overs. It was as good a start one could have expected in the Powerplay overs.
With the progression of the game, the pitch became slow and difficult to bat on. The way Jesal Karia got the ball to grip showed that it was a slow wicket. On such a wicket, Gayle got his team to a good start. In 27 balls, Gayle scored 52 runs and seemed to bat on a totally different wicket. It was his first fifty in the ongoing league.
Wicket gets slow in Ranchi to make batting difficult
With the progression of the match, the wicket became slow. With the hard ball, it was easy to score runs. It was not easy against the soft ball. Hence, the knock of Gayle meant a lot more than one could actually see from just the scoreboard. Other batters from Gujarat Giants around and after him struggled to score runs at a good rate.
In the last 14.2 overs, GG got only 112 runs. After the initial attack from Gayle, GG should have got a lot. But the slow nature of the wicket and Karia’s bowling meant that GG could not accelerate as well as they would have liked. In their 20 overs, GG ended up with a score of 172 runs. It was just above par on a wicket that has some assistance for the spinners in the middle overs.
