After defeating five-time champion Australia in a high-voltage game, India (IND) is set to face its next challenge in the ODI World Cup 2023. The team will face neighboring Afghanistan (AFG) at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on October 11. Ahead of the game, the Indian team faced a setback as star batter Shubman Gill failed to recover from dengue.
In a press release, the Indian Cricket Board revealed that Gill has been under medical observation and didn’t travel to Delhi. He is in Chennai and will not be available for the selection against Afghanistan. On the other hand, Afghanistan (AFG) faced a humiliating defeat against Bangladesh in Dharamshala. Apart from wicketkeeper-batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz, not a single Afghani batter looked comfortable against Bangladesh spinners.
In another setback for team spinner Rashid Khan, he has failed to make an impact. His inability to take wickets in the last few months has greatly troubled Afghanistan. However, the team will hope for him to make a comeback against the mighty Indians. It’s worth noting that Afghanistan has won just one match in the last 19 World Cup games, which also came against Scotland in 2015.

Pitch Report:
The Arun Jaitley Stadium favours batsmen with its dry conditions and short boundaries, allowing them to easily hit boundaries. As the match unfolds, the dry pitch can also aid spinners, adding an extra dimension to the game. Given these pitch traits, teams often opt to bat first after winning the toss. They aim to set a competitive total on the board and effectively defend it, capitalizing on conditions that benefit both batsmen and spinners.
IND vs AFG: Head-to-Head records
In the ODI World Cup, India has faced Afghanistan once in the last two editions. In the 2019 World Cup, India beat Afghanistan by 11 runs in a nail-biting thriller. However, in overall records, Afghanistan has yet to beat the mighty Indians in ODI format.
