‘Bhailog wapis aagaye hain saaare’ – Fans react to Mumbai Indians appointing Lasith Malinga as bowling coach

Lasith Malinga will re-unite with his favourite players from the MI franchise as well

Lasith Malinga

For the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL), Lasith Malinga is all ready to make a comeback to Mumbai Indians (MI) to be a fast bowling coach. According to reports, he will succeed Shane Bond, who is retiring from MI despite nine years. From 2008 to 2020, Malinga was a member of MI and finished with the most wickets in the competition. After he retired in 2021, he collected 170 wickets across 122 IPL games, which puts him joint-sixth in the T20 league.

Then, for the IPL 2022 and 2023 seasons, the Sri Lankan signed Rajasthan Royals (RR) to be their pace-bowling coach. The Royals reached the finals in 2022, but after finishing fifth in the standings in 2023, they could not advance to the elimination rounds.

Despite being forced off for the 2020 season, Malinga won four IPL championships alongside MI (2013, 2015, 2017, and 2019). In 2011, he and the Mumbai-based franchise also took home the Champions League T20 championship.

It will be Malinga’s second tenure with MI to be a support staff member, according to ESPNCricinfo. Before he resumed to the field a year later, the lanky pacer had worked as their mentor in 2018. The 39-year-old has decided to concentrate on developing young bowling prospects including Akash Madhwal, who filled in for Jasprit Bumrah in the IPL 2023. In the 2023 season, only Madhwal (14 wickets in eight matches) as well as Jason Behrendorff (14 wickets across 12 games) from MI were able to take more than 10 wickets.

Shane Bond’s association with Mumbai Indian franchise

It’s still unclear if Shane Bond, who joined the Mumbai Indians in 2015, would stick around for their sister teams in the SA20 (South Africa), Major League Cricket (USA), as well as ILT20 (UAE).

In addition to coaching MI’s fast bowlers, he also oversaw MI Emirates’ ILT20 team in January and February of this year. In the six-team competition, the franchise came in third place.

MI, on the other side, lost the second qualifier against Gujarat Titans and finished in the knockout stages of the IPL 2023.
