Rajasthan and Mumbai played each at the D.Y. Patil Stadium in Mumbai. The Men In Blue won the toss and elected to bowl against a side that had won all of their six games batting first. The wicket was difficult to bat with the ball gripping on the surface. The innings off 38 runs of 44 balls from Jos Buttler till the end of 15 overs was evidence of the slowness of the surface.
Skipper Sanju Samson did start well with seven-ball 16 but his innings ended prematurely. Daryl Mitchell, who was playing as a batting all-rounder also struggled during his 17-ball 20 as he could hit only one four. On the other hand, Buttler broke the shackles as he hit four sixes in the 16th over to reach 67 from 43 but couldn’t carry on. Another in-form player Shimron Hetmyer labored his way to an unbeaten 14-ball six.
Apart from Buttler’s innings, Ravichandran Ashwin’s unbeaten 21 off nine helped the team to reach 158/6 which looked competitive. In reply, Ishan Kishan started playing as he did in the first two games but his innings was ended by Trent Boult while batting on 26 off 18. Skipper Rohit Sharma, who looked like gaining some in the last against Lucknow with a quick 30-odd, got out only scoring two.
At 41/2, in form batters, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma stitched a partnership of 81 runs to keep the team within the reach of the target. Yadav scored 51 off 39 on a difficult wicket. On the other hand, Varma played the supporting role with a 30-ball 35. They fell in quick succession and it looked like the five-time winners could go on to lose their record straight nine games.
However, they found a hero in the form of Tim David, who scored an unbeaten 20 off nine and won the game for the team with four balls to spare and five wickets in hand. His partner, Kieron Pollard struggled during his 14-ball 10 but played an important role for the team’s first win of the season.
