The Indian cricket board is on the hunt for a selector who can lead the five-member board in the upcoming days. The board is looking to fill the vacant post left behind by the former chief selector, Chetan Sharma. Mr Sharma resigned from the post after his sting operation went viral in the media.
However, it is going to be a difficult task for the Indian Cricket Board to approach any former superstar for this job. Meanwhile, according to media reports, former Mumbai chief selector and Indian cricketer Ajit Agarkar is leading the race to become the next chief selector. According to media reports, he is set to fill the void as he has all the required skills and experience that the board is looking for.
Interestingly, there is no age limit for applications, so a cricketer beyond the age of 60 may become the chief selector. The Board has set an age limit of 60 for selectors since 2016. The majority of the other criteria remain unchanged. The applicant must have played at least seven Tests, thirty first-class matches, or ten One-Day Internationals and twenty first-class matches. In addition, contenders must have retired from the game at least five years ago.
Will Virender Sehwag apply for the post?
Apart from Agarkar, it has been reported that former India batter Virender Sehwag is eyeing this post. In the past, he has expressed his desire to become the head coach of the National team. However, Sehwag himself has burst the bubble of speculation that he has been approached by the board to become the chief selector.
It’s worth noting that Shiv Sundar Das, who has the most Test caps among the present squad, is acting as temporary leader, with assistance from Salil Ankola, Subroto Banerjee, and S Sharath. If the Board cannot find someone with more experience than Das to fill the position of fifth selector, Das will remain as chief selector.
With the ODI World Cup in less than four months, the incoming top selector may have to rely heavily on the vision of head coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma. Once in place, the five-member committee’s first responsibility will be to choose India’s squad for the Asia Cup, which begins on August 31 and serves as a dress rehearsal for the quadrennial event.
