The defending champion of the Indian T20 League, Chennai has begun its journey for the 15th edition of the tournament in the worst way possible. They have lost all four of their games so far in the tournament. Nothing is seemingly clicking for the men in yellow. After their latest defeat against Hyderabad, the Head Coach of the team Stephen Fleming spoke about the reasons behind their dismal performance.
According to the former Kiwi batter, the absence of Deepak Chahar has been a big factor in the team’s disappointing show. He also reckons that the team’s self-belief has been shaken after four defeats on the trot. Notably, Hyderabad also started their campaign on a losing note after defeats in the first two matches. But they registered their first victory of the season, after winning convincingly against Chennai.
“I think it’s clear. Batting, bowling and fielding is what we need to work on. And moving forward we improve our batting, bowling and fielding. We were well outplayed today. We’re sort of learning. We’ve got some issues around player availability, and in some areas a little bit underpowered, that we are just looking for players to step up,â€- Fleming said in the post-match conversation with the media.
“And we haven’t had any evidence that sort of helps the belief. We are not winning any games. Not being close to winning any games, you get a bit of self-doubt, and the players get a bit niggly. So, we just got to work through pretty quickly and try to find some rhythm and get back in the tournament,â€- he further added.
Chennai has qualified for the play-offs in all the seasons of the Indian T20 League, except in 2022. But as far as their journey in the 15th edition is concerned, it might well be their second season where they don’t get a chance to play in the playoffs. The fans of the team will hope that they make a dramatic comeback and prove their critics wrong.
