Rohit Sharma, the Indian skipper, was rested for the T20I series against Sri Lanka and the Indian batter opened up on his future, saying that he would still play in the shortest format of the game. The right-handed batter said that his return would depend on the upcoming Indian T20 League and added that he has not given up on the format yet.
The Rohit-led Indian team would take on Sri Lanka in a three-match ODI series set to get underway on January 10, Tuesday and the batter attended a press conference on Monday. When many opined that the Indian cricket board and the selectors have moved on from the veteran, the batter clarified saying that he still has a chance to play for India in T20Is.
We’ll see what happens after the Indian T20 League: Rohit Sharma
For the unversed, the Indian veteran and superstar Virat Kohli was not a part of the squad for the T20I series against the Lankan Lions alongside the Indian skipper as well. However, with Rohit clarifying that there is still a chance for the veterans to be a part of the T20I setup, it remains to be seen if the selectors would go ahead with the youngsters or would get back to India’s stars.
“We have only six T20Is, three are over. So we’ll manage, you know to look after those boys till the Indian T20 League. Then we’ll see what happens after the Indian T20 League. But certainly, I’ve not decided to give up the format,” Rohit was quoted as saying in the press conference.
“At the moment I think it was made clear in the past that it’s a 50-over World Cup year for us. And for some of the guys, it’s not possible to play all formats. If you look at the schedule, there were back-to-back matches, so we decided on just looking at some players’ workload that we wanted to make sure that they get enough break time and manage them. I definitely fall in that (category) as well,” he added.
Here’s how fans have reacted to Rohit Sharma’s press conference:
