According to reports, Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah will not play in the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka, which begins on Tuesday. The pacer has not represented India since September 2022 due to a back injury. He also missed the 20-20 World Cup played in Australia.
Bumrah was initially named to India’s squad for the ODI series against Sri Lanka on the recommendation of the selection committee. “The All-India Selection Committee has included pacer Jasprit Bumrah in India’s ODI squad for the upcoming Mastercard 3-match ODI series against Sri Lanka,” an Indian Cricket Board statement read that was released earlier.
However, the Board has decided to remove his name from the squad because they do not want to rush Bumrah and prefer to give him some extra time to recover. It was also revealed that the primary concern came from NCA staff, who advised taking things slowly, especially with the Australia Test Series coming up.
According to reports, the fast bowler will be available for the New Zealand ODI series, which begins on January 18. So far, no replacement for Bumrah has been announced, and the governing body of Indian cricket has not issued a formal statement.
Except for Bumrah, who did not accompany the team to Guwahati, all of the other players who were not part of the T20I squad have joined the team in the Assam capital. India captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Shreyas Iyer have already arrived in Guwahati to prepare for the ODI series.
In the meantime, some fans opined that it was the right call to not rush things. “The right decision in the end. Back problem… precaution is better than another injury,” a user wrote. On the other hand, most users suggested that this would have never been the case if it was the Indian T20 League.
“Good decision as IPL is very near so neither @BCCI nor @mipaltan want to take risk they want him to be fresh and completely fit for IPL, Looks like @mipaltan is driving @BCCI great,” a user wrote.
Here is how Twitter reacted to Jasprit Bumrah’s news

It’s good that @BCCI is alert but main problem is IPL, As Indian I really want to enjoy IPL. We keep getting news – BCCI medical team will be in touch with franchise but are we going to see that players opting out of IPL fully/partially in a World Cup year like Eng/AUS stars ?

He will forget to Bowl if its too long..! Coming back for a fast bowler after a long lay off is not that easy…Bumrah had enough of rest.. its time.. if he's all fit.. no more holidays!@BCCI

The right decision in the end. Back problem… precaution is better than another injury.
But then you think of communication channels.
