Team India is going through a rough spell of almost a decade in which it manages to emerge victorious in a bilateral series but falls flat when it comes to a World event. The last time India won a major title was in 2013 when the MS Dhoni-led side triumphed in the Champions Trophy.
Since then the team has underperformed in every major event. Recently India embarrassed itself in the Asia Cup 2022 as well as the 20-20 World Cup 2022 in Australia.
The Indian Cricket Board is naturally facing a lot of tough questions from the fans and critics for their inability to create a title-winning team despite having all the money and talent in the world.
In order to bring about a winning shift in the Indian team, the Indian Cricket Board held a review meeting with head coach Rahul Dravid, captain Rohit Sharma, and chief selector Chetan Shama. The Indian Cricket Board chairman Jay Shah and Indian Cricket Academy head VVS Laxman were also part of the meeting. The meeting was meant to discuss the performance in the year 2022 and the course of actions that needs to be taken for the future.
The meeting has brought about multiple changes to the selection process for the team as well as increased importance on player workload management. The biggest announcement has been the comeback of the ‘yo-yo test’ for the selection of a player.
What is DEXA?
Another big announcement was the inclusion of DEXA as part of the selection criteria. DEXA which stands for Dual X-ray Absorptiometry is a test to find bone density in human beings. Essentially it shows bone strength and could provide information about potential fractures in players’ bones.
The scan produces two types of beams- one high and one low which are allowed to pass through the bone. The difference in the number of x-rays emitted on the other end signifies the bone density of the human body part.
Notably, the ‘yo-yo test’ was scrapped during covid-19 owing to a higher level of fatigue among players while in bio-bubble. Now that the restrictions have been lifted, the yo-yo test has also been reinstated.
