The India team had an embarrassing Asia Cup 2022 campaign as they lost against Sri Lanka and Pakistan and crashed out. With the 20-20 World Cup nearing at a fast pace, Indian selectors had to move quickly and come up with a match-winning squad.
On Monday 12th September 2022, the Indian Cricket Board finally announced the team for the upcoming 20-20 World Cup. The team however was exactly the same as that of Asia Cup 2022. India also announced their squad for the upcoming Australia and South Africa series which will be played ahead of the World Cup.
The Indian World Cup team will be led by Rohit Sharma and assisted by KL Rahul who will travel as the vice-captain of the team. Virat Kohli who finally broke his century drought at the Asia Cup 2022 has also been included in the team as a top-order batter.
Suryakumar Yadav, India’s highest-ranked batter in T20Is has also been included despite doing poorly at the continental tournament. Rishabh Pant, Dinesh Karthik and Hardik Pandya make the middle order for the 20-20 World Cup squad.
Deepak Hooda who could not showcase his batting and bowling quality has been shown massive faith by the selectors and has been chosen for the upcoming mega event. In the bowling department, Jasprit Bumrah makes his way straight to the team after getting into full fitness. Bhuvneshwar Kumar who ended the Asia Cup campaign as the highest wicket-taker also makes it to the squad. Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravi Ashwin, Arshdeep Singh and Harshal Patel and the final four names on the squad sheet. Meanwhile, Mohammad Shami, Shreyas Iyer, Ravi Bishnoi and Deepak Chahar have been chosen as standby players for the World Cup.
Many on Twitter however could not digest Pant’s inclusion in the team and Sanju Samson’s exclusion. Many also spoke in favour of Kuldeep Yadav and Ishan Kishan’s inclusion.
