The entire nation is celebrating the 75th Independence Day today. Our beloved motherland has completed an incredible 75-year journey since 15th August 1947 and has taken giant strides towards progress in all the fields. Sports have been an integral part of India’s rich history.
The country’s incredible journey in the sporting arena began in 1928 when the Men’s hockey team brought home the first ever Gold medal in the Olympics. India further stamped their authority in the sport as they further won 8 gold medals 1 Silver and Three Bronze in the sport.
Last year, the Indian contingent gave their best ever performance in the history of the Olympics winning a total of seven medals. Neeraj Chopra became India’s second ever individual gold medalist and also the first ever medal winner for the country in athletics. The recently finished Commonwealth Games also saw the Indian contingent giving their best in their respective sports as they finished on the fourth position in the overall medals tally.

India won a total of 60 medals which included 22 Gold, 16 Silver and 23 bronze. India also managed to win a medal in the Lawn Bowls for the first time that too a Gold.
The field of cricket has also brought some glory to the nation as the Women’s Cricket team managed to win a silver medal in the Commonwealth Games as the sport was being played only for the second time at the sporting extravaganza. The Indian Men’s cricket team have failed to win a major trophy but have been consistently performing well in multi-national tournaments. The team led by the new captain Rohit Sharma will be looking to change that this year as they aim to win the upcoming 20-20 world cup in Australia.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, today in his speech before the flag hosting at the Red Fort mentioned the contribution of the Indian sporting stars in making the nation proud through their stellar performances on the Global stage.
