All-rounder Ben Stokes will not be available for the 2024 season for the reigning Indian Premier League (IPL) champion Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Stokes is set to undergo knee surgery. The England international has a busy first half of 2024 planned, which includes both the T20 World Cup and a taxing five-match Test series in India.
Following a hefty ?16.25 crore offer at the IPL 2023 mini-auction, Stokes became CSK’s record purchase.
The all-rounder was last seen representing England at the ODI World Cup 2023. Although England was unable to successfully defend their championship, Stokes had a strong individual campaign. Alongside Dawid Malan, he was one of just two players that scored more than 300 runs in the season, finishing with 304 runs across six games.
The Chennai Super Kings released a statement to announce the same. The statement read, “England Test captain, all-rounder Ben Stokes has made himself unavailable for IPL 2024 to manage his workload and fitness. Stokes, 32, became a part of the Super Kings ahead of the successful IPL 2023. He recently participated in the ODI World Cup 2023, which he came out of retirement for. The Chennai Super Kings management is supportive of Ben in his decision to manage his workload with England playing a 5-Test series in India before the IPL and then the T20 World Cup in June 2024.”
Ben Stokes’ poor IPL 2023 season
Everyone was aware of Ben Stokes’ incapacity to play as a true all-rounder. Most people still anticipated seeing the player in the IPL in 2023 as a batter. He only bowled one over and scored an overall of 15 runs in his two games for his new team throughout the season.
After the IPL season ended, he went on to play for the Ashes. He took part in the 50-over format, having reversed his decision to retire from ODIs. Stokes was widely regarded by analysts as the team’s future captain, taking over from MS Dhoni. The all-around player’s tenure with the five-time champs hasn’t been great, and things don’t appear good for the future either.

CSK is better off without spending 16 crores on him. And when Stokes is not playing ODIs anymore, what type of workload we're talking about?
