In the latest development, legendary India batter Sachin Tendulkar has been appointed as a National Icon by the Election Commission of India. Ahead of the upcoming Assembly and Lok Sabha polls, EC appointed Sachin as National Icon. In his three years long term, Sachin will spread awareness among voters and encourage them to vote.
This is a move by EC to increase voter turnout in the upcoming elections. Sachin and ECI signed a memorandum on Wednesday here in New Delhi. “This collaboration would mark a significant step towards leveraging Tendulkar’s unparalleled impact with the youth for increasing voters’ participation in the forthcoming elections, especially in general elections (to Lok Sabha), 2024,” the EC said in a statement.
The partnership aims to tackle the challenges of urban and youth apathy towards voting, initiated by the EC. The EC has engaged with distinguished Indians from various domains, assigning them the title of “national icons” to inspire voters and encourage their involvement in the electoral process.

Earlier, The Election Commission has enlisted renowned individuals as “national icons” to catalyze electoral participation, and Sachin isn’t the first one. Eminent personalities like actor Pankaj Tripathi, former India cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni, actor Aamir Khan, and Boxer Mary Kom have all held the designation of “national icons.” They have been actively driving voter engagement in past elections.
