Wanindu Hasaranga will not play in the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023, which might be a blow for Sri Lanka. According to a Sports Hour story, Hasaranga will not compete in the major competition in India. Sri Lanka Cricket has another four days to confirm Hasaranga’s replacement for ODI World Cup 2023
Hasaranga might have been an important member of the Sri Lankan team because of his IPL experience and his familiarity with Indian playing conditions. Hasaranga may have changed the outcome for his team because spin is also expected to receive support in the World Cup.
He will be sorely missed by the Sri Lankan team. Dasun Shanaka will most likely captain the team. In sub-continental circumstances, Sri Lanka can be the underdog. October 7 at the Arun Jaitley stadium in Delhi, Sri Lanka are playing against South Africa in the opening match of the tournament.
On November 2, the Lankan team will face the Indian hosts in the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai. The two teams had previously faced off in the World Cup final in 2011 at the same venue. The final squad will probably be announced by SLC soon.
“We are looking at other options” : Arjuna de Silva
The 26-year-old is dealing with a grade III hamstring injury which can take some to recover from. However, medical personnel are working against the clock for the spinner’s availability. The head of the Sri Lanka Cricket Medical Panel, Prof. Arjuna de Silva, had earlier stated that Wanindu Hasaranga’s prospects of competing in the competition are “very remote”.
He said, “We are consulting foreign doctors to see whether he needs surgery or not. If he does, he will be out for at least three months. At the moment, the situation is not that great and it’s highly unlikely if he can play the World Cup.”
He added that, “Since he is a key weapon in our attack, we are looking at other options to see how best we can get his services at least for important games. All that depends on the opinions of the consultant to whom we are trying to show his reports.”
