So close to another World Cup, the 2019 World Cup’s finalists, England as well as New Zealand, are engaging in a four-match ODI series. The Kiwis hold a 1-0 series advantage and are off to an excellent start during the second ODI likewise. Trent Boult came back into the team after 10 months and started troubling the batters right from the off. During the 34-over per side match after choosing to bowl first, he scalped three wickets in his opening spell which meant that England were on the back foot.
One of the wickets was only possible because of Mitchell Santner’s exceptional agility. Jonny Bairstow, the opening batsman for England, looked to play over the line on the inswinger that Boult bowled about the middle stump line. Santner was positioned in cover, but the ball followed the front edge of the bat for it to get there.
The fielder made a remarkable leap upward to catch the ball that was moving while using only one hand. Santner once again led New Zealand’s outstanding fielding with a fantastic performance. After managing only six runs from eight balls in his opening game of the series, Bairstow left the field.
Two balls later, Trent Boult displayed his ball-handling prowess by trapping Joe Root in the vicinity of the stumps resulting in a two-ball duck. Ben Stokes again gave Boult his wicket, which caused England’s decline to worsen.
Why Trent Boult did not play the first ODI against England?
Cricket fans were puzzled by this move, but it seemed like New Zealand was purposefully giving other bowlers an opportunity ahead of the ODI World Cup next month.
As part of their strategic plan to be ready for the ODI World Cup in 2023, New Zealand were without Trent Boult for the first ODI against England. The main drivers behind this choice might be controlling Boult’s workload, gauging bench strength, fostering team unity, and determining tournament readiness.
Boult’s absence may have disappointed some supporters, but it demonstrates New Zealand’s dedication to their future prosperity and their resolve to compete at the top level in the upcoming ODI World Cup.
