In Barranquilla, Colombia, the hometown of internationally renowned singer Shakira, a 6.5-meter-tall bronze statue of her has been constructed. Her dancing position from songs like “Hips Don’t Lie” is depicted in the statue. The statue was made by Yino Márquez, a sculptor, and his pupils. On Wednesday, Shakira posted a video and images of the statue on Instagram. The 46-year-old’s parents were seen posing in front of the statue in the photos. Additionally present at the unveiling ceremony was Barranquilla’s mayor.
The well-known singer also posted a photo of the informational plaque about her life and the statue that is located at its base. She is praised for having “A voice that moves masses” and her birthdate is mentioned on the plaque. It also showcases her charitable endeavours, which include founding the “Pies Descalzos” foundation, which supports early childhood development and translates to “bare feet” in Spanish.

The plaque on the statue reads, “On January 2, 1977, born in Barranquilla for the world: A heart that composes, hips that don’t lie, unparalleled talent, a voice that moves masses, and bare feet that march for the good of childhood and humanity. 6.50 meters of bronze have been sculpted of Shakira performing her well-known belly dance. The aluminium end of her skirt represents the river’s and the sea’s waves.”
It further read, “Her lifted arms and hands interlocked vertically symbolize the reach of transcendence. Created in the La Paz neighbourhood by artist Yino Marques with assistance from District School of Arts alumni and students.” Below the description are the names of Jaime Pumarejo Heins and Yino Marquez.
