In the ongoing ODI World Cup, defending champions England continue their horrible run. After getting thrashed by Afghanistan, the Jos Buttler-led squad fell prey to South Africa. In a one-sided game, Porteas outplayed England in all departments of the game and beat them by 229 runs at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
After winning the toss, England skipper Jos Buttler opted to bowl first. It was the last time the English team had a smile on their face. Buttler’s decision to bowl first didn’t go well with the team, as Rassie Van der Dussen and Reeza Hendricks added 121 runs for the second wicket. Van der Dussen, in his inning, scored 60 runs off 61 balls with the help of six sixes.
Meanwhile, Hendricks scored 85 runs off 75 balls with the help of nine fours and three sixes. After their departure, the middle order of South Africa went all out against the English bowling line-up. The team added 143 runs in the last ten overs and dismantled the English bowlers. Henrich Klaasen, in his inning, scored 109 runs off 67 balls with the help of 12 fours and four sixes.
On the other hand, all-rounder Marco Jansen smashed six sixes and three boundaries to score 75 runs off just 42 balls. Their amazing batting performance helped South Africa post 399/7 in 50 overs. Meanwhile, for England, Pacer Reece Topley took three wickets, while Gus Atkinson and Adil Rashid got two wickets each.
England failed to hold nerves against South African pacers
Chasing a massive total, England had the worst possible start. Opener Jonny Bairstow was dismissed by pacer Lungi Ngidi for a mere 10 runs off 12 balls. Meanwhile, Jansen dismissed Joe Root and Dawid Malan in quick succession. Star pacer Kagiso Rabada continued South Africa’s dominance as he dismissed all-rounder Ben Stokes for a mere five runs.
The poor shot selection from English batters continued, and South Africa gripped the game soon. England lost eight wickets for just 100 runs. However, a power-hitting display from Mark Wood and Gus Atkinson helped England cross the 150-run mark. Atkinson, in his inning, scored 35 runs off 21 balls with the help of seven boundaries. Meanwhile, Wood, in his inning, scored an unbeaten 43 runs off just 17 balls with the help of two fours and five sixes.
Wood was the top scorer for England, while Atkinson was in second place. Not a single batter from the top 8 crossed the 20-run mark. However, for South Africa, Gerald Coetzee clinched three wickets, while Lungi Ngidi and Marco Jansen got two wickets each. Kagiso Rabada and Keshav Maharaj also got wickets.
